10+ feet of snow on the ground, Is your Board ready?
January 13th, 2008Treat yourself and your Board to a true professional wax & tune with California Board Life (CBL) in Folsom.
Here’s what you get in CBL’s $25.00 professional wax & tune.
- We start by stripping your board of old wax with an eco-friendly wax remover.
- Then we remove any rust build up and file your edges to the best angle for your ride style. — don’t worry we’ll ask the right questions to get your board tuned to work it’s best for YOU.
- Next we fine sand the base and edges to knock down any minor scrapes on the base and prepare any areas on the base in need of “p-tex fill”.
- We repair the minor “dings” in the base. (we can major “dings” as well, they just cost a bit extra)
- After all that , we hand iron the temperature appropriate wax into your base
and hand scrape the excess wax off before doing the final compression buff.
A tune like this WILL make your board ride faster, handle better and be more forgiving with “catching edges”.

CBL Skate lesson program ranks in Top 5 of California!
December 29th, 2007December 2007 - California Board Life’s skate lesson program, ran in conjunction with the City of Folsom has been ranked as one of California’s top beginner skateboarding lesson programs. The lesson program started by professional skateboarding instructor Brian Owens in 2002 has grown from a small program offering just a couple of classes per year, to a year-round program with 100’s of students. The programs popularity has prompted new class offerings for 2008. When asked about program growth, Brian Owens stated “in addition to offering more private lessons, classes for Dads and longboarding lessons, this year we will have a home-school option that will accommodate PE requirements for home-schooled students”. Congrats and thank you to a Skate Shop that really gets it!

Back in Action! (kinda)
December 1st, 2007Thanks to the support from CBL customers/friends, I’m Finally back to work at CBL! A very special thanks to Dan, Cassy, Nelson, Struan, Alex and Dr. Coward and his staff. An unexpected complication with my knee surgery put me out for an additional 8 days but I’m on my way to a full recovery, and I’m HAPPY to be on the road back to extreme sport participation. This was my second reconstruction on the same knee and I wanted best knee surgeon in Sacramento to do the procedure. Dr. Coward successfully performed a complete ACL replacement, MCL repair and removed a portion of my meniscus disc. In the process he inserted some additional “hardware” in the knee and gave me a few new scares to show off. The surgery went great and I was really beginning to feel better when I developed an extremely painful blood clot in my calf muscle. The clot was far more painful than my knee and was focus for the 5-6 days as I waited for the wonderful daily injections of Lovenox to take effect. As the clot has dissolved, the pain has dissipated and my life is slowly getting back to normal. In this case the proverbial “price paid to play” was a bit more than I anticipated… but, whadda you gonna do? — It’s my lifestyle!!!!

Knee surgery anyone? The Price We Pay to Play!
November 6th, 2007Anyone who has has participated in extreme board sports for any length of time has most likely experienced a sport stopping injury. I mean let’s face it if you’re really pushing the boundaries then you are always one turn away from a catastrophe. Most of us work on a calculated risk theory involving weighing personal our skill against the challenges we choose - factoring in our willingness to deal with the potential repercussions. It’s rare that someone will truly understand the price we pay to play until they’ve experienced an injury that puts their lifestyle on hold. I’ve experienced it, and I’m about to take another run at it.
Nov 7th: 2nd time, same knee - ACL replacement, MCL repair & partial meniscus removal. It’s the reality of a small misstep when you’re driven by adrenaline and progression in a BOARD lifestyle. I’m not looking forward to the large dose of pain that im about to take but, the outcome is worth it. This is like a test to see if I can keep focused on the outcome and not let the mental aspects get to me. The doubts and fears of loosing hard earned skills, the reality that I’m getting older … blah blah blah The truth is, I am willing to pay and I’m dreaming of the minute I can step on my board and get back to MY life! Thanks for all the support! Skate, Surf, Snowboard, Wakesurf, Skim, Wake and Mountain BOARD with ya in 6 months - Brian
